To merge tally and joint map updates from the field

Large pipeline projects have many survey crews working on multiple sections of the pipeline at any one time. In addition, different survey crews can work on different phases and sections of the pipeline on a daily basis, collecting tally and joint mapping data or using the previously collected tally and joint mapping data. To maximize the efficiency of each survey crew, all crews should have access to the tally and joint map data collected by other field crews the previous day.

To do this, create projects in Trimble Sync Manager and download the project files to the controller. At the end of each day, each field crew uploads their updated tally and joint map files to the cloud using the Sync tally files screen in the Pipelines software. Other project changes including job data are uploaded at the same time. In the office, the changes from the field are merged to the primary set of tally files using the Merge Tally File function in Trimble Sync Manager. Once the updates from all field crews have been merged, field crews can use the Sync tally files screen to download the updated set of primary tally files at the start of the following workday. For more information, see Trimble Sync Manager Help

  • Once the project has been downloaded to the controller for the first time, you must send updates to the cloud or download the latest primary set of tally files using the Sync tally files function in the Pipelines app.

You should not use the Upload or Download option in the Projects or Jobs screens in Trimble Access to synchronize a Pipelines project once the project has been downloaded to the controller for the first time. While these functions upload or download project files including Pipelines files, these options do not move files in and out of the Upload and Download folders in the Tally folder which means that the latest changes to the tally and joint map files are not transferred. Only the Sync tally files function uploads tally and joint map files to the cloud and, once the uploaded changes have been merged in the office, downloads the latest primary set of tally files.

  • Tally files are merged in the office in Trimble Sync Manager. The contents of the Tally folder are not merged when you upload tally files to or download tally files from the cloud. Your organization's process for managing primary tally files should allow a suitable time period for the files to be merged in the office between when the tally files are uploaded to the cloud and when the updated primary set is downloaded to the controller.
  • If you are unable to synchronize tally files, see If you are unable to sync data in Synchronizing data with the cloud.
