Software installation and licensing

This topic explains the Trimble Access software licenses required to install Trimble Access, as well as additional license types that are required to use some features of the software.

You can check the types of licenses installed to the controller at any time in the About screen of the Trimble Access software. If you are signed in, the About screen also shows the subscription licenses assigned to you. See Viewing license information.

Trimble Access software licenses

You can purchase Trimble Access software licenses as a perpetual license that is licensed to the controller or as a subscription license that is assigned to an individual user. Licenses are required for the General Survey app as well as for each Trimble Access app you want to use.

If you have purchased a perpetual license then to update software on the controller the controller must have a current Trimble Access Software Maintenance Agreement.

Use the Trimble License Manager web app to assign subscriptions to users in your organization or to extend or request a Software Maintenance Agreement for a controller. You must be signed in as a License Administrator to be able to do this. For more information, see the Trimble License Manager Help.

Additional subscription licenses

To use some features of the Trimble Access software, additional subscription licenses are required.

Trimble Connect Business subscription licenses

To synchronize Trimble Access field data with the cloud, the signed in user must have a Trimble Connect license. If you are using a controller with a perpetual license, then the controller must have a current Trimble Access Software Maintenance Agreement.

To synchronize data, Trimble recommends that all users have a Trimble Connect Business subscription because it allows users to create more projects and synchronize data with more projects than a Trimble Connect Personal subscription. Trimble Access users can obtain a Trimble Connect Business subscription at no cost in the following ways:

  • Trimble Connect Business subscriptions are automatically included with Trimble Access subscriptions. For those users no further action is needed.

  • For Trimble Access perpetual license users, a Trimble Connect Business subscription is available with each current Software Maintenance Agreement. However, your organization's License Administrator must assign the Trimble Connect Business subscription to the specific user using the Trimble License Manager web app. Until the Trimble Connect Business subscription is assigned to the user, then that user will have a Trimble Connect Personal subscription and can create or synchronize data only to a limited number of projects.

    To assign Trimble Connect Business subscription licenses to users in your organization, sign in to the Trimble License Manager web app as a License Administrator. For more information, see the Trimble License Manager Help.

To install or update Trimble Access software to your controller, use Trimble Installation Manager:

Trimble Installation Manager for Android must remain installed on the controller for the Trimble Access software to run. On a Windows device, Trimble Installation Manager for Windows can be installed and uninstalled as required, without affecting the Trimble Access software.

To use your Trimble Access subscription license for the first time, you must sign in using your Trimble ID. Otherwise you are prompted to sign in only if you have previously signed out.

If you cannot sign in then you can use the software in limited mode. Limited mode provides access to the data on the controller until you are able to sign in again.

When you are signed in you may also be able to synchronize Trimble Access data with the cloud.

By default, Trimble Access subscriptions are locked to the controller until you sign out. You must sign out on the current controller before you can use your subscriptions on a different controller. If you don't always use the same controller, you can configure the software to release your subscription licenses automatically when exiting the software, or to prompt you to sign out and release your subscription on exit. To do this, select the appropriate option from the When exiting the software field in the About screen.

To comply with Chinese data regulations concerning the upload of Chinese geospatial data to servers outside of China, Trimble Access allows sign in with Trimble Identity for use of subscriptions, but prevents use of the Trimble Connect cloud platform if your IP address is determined to be in China.

To view licensing information for Trimble Access apps installed on the controller, tap and select About. Licenses shown are organized by type:

  • User licenses:

    • Trimble Access subscription licenses

    • Related subscription licenses assigned to the current user (for example, Trimble Connect)

      A Trimble Connect Business subscription allows you to create more projects and synchronize data with more projects than a Trimble Connect Personal subscription. If you are using a perpetual license for Trimble Access then the controller must have a current Trimble Access Software Maintenance Agreement for you to be able to synchronize Trimble Access data with the cloud.

  • Controller licenses:

    • Trimble Access perpetual licenses

    • Trimble Access demo/trial licenses

 

  • By default, Trimble Access subscriptions are locked to the controller until you sign out. You must sign out on the current controller before you can use your subscriptions on a different controller. If you don't always use the same controller, you can configure the software to release your subscription licenses automatically when exiting the software, or to prompt you to sign out and release your subscription on exit. To do this, select the appropriate option from the When exiting the software field in the About screen.

  • Information about GNSS receiver options provided by subscription are not shown in the About screen because that subscription is specific to an individual receiver and is not locked to the user or the controller. If you are using a receiver that has options provided by Trimble GNSS subscription (such as an R750 or R780 receiver), tap and select Instrument / Receiver settings to view information about the subscription.

If the About screen does not show the licenses that you expect or need, contact your organization's License Administrator. This person is someone within your organization who uses the Trimble License Manager web app to administer licenses to users in your organization. The Software maintenance expiry field applies only to perpetual licenses. It does not apply to subscription licenses.

The expiry date of the Software Maintenance Agreement is shown in the Software maintenance expiry field.

If you are using a perpetual license for Trimble Access then the controller must have a current Trimble Access Software Maintenance Agreement for you to be able to synchronize Trimble Access data with the cloud or to update the Trimble Access software.

If you or your organization's License Administrator has recently renewed or extended your controller's Software Maintenance Agreement, you must run the Trimble Installation Manager software on the controller to download and install the new software maintenance file. Once this is installed, the Software maintenance expiry field shows the new expiry date.

The Trimble Solution Improvement Program collects information about how you use Trimble programs and about some of the problems you may encounter. Trimble uses this information to improve the products and features you use most often, to help you to solve problems, and to better meet your needs.

Participation in the program is strictly voluntary. If you participate, the Trimble Access log file is automatically sent to the Trimble server each time you start the Trimble Access software. The file includes data on what the Trimble equipment is being used for, what software functions are popular in specific geographical regions, and how often problems occur in Trimble products that Trimble can correct.

At any time, you can choose to participate, or not to participate in the Solution Improvement Program. To do this, in Trimble Access tap and select About. Tap Legal and select Solution Improvement Program. Select or clear the I would like to participate in the Solution Improvement Program check box.

This version of Trimble Access can open jobs from version 2017.00 and later when running on a Windows device, and version 2019.00 and later when running on an Android device. When you open the job from the Jobs screen, Trimble Access automatically converts the job to the current version of the software.

There are several ways to convert older Trimble Access jobs to use with the latest version of Trimble Access.

Trimble Access template (.JOT) files and survey styles (.STY) files are very similar to job files and are converted in the same way as job files. Job conversion methods discussed below also apply to templates and survey styles.
