Background image files

If your controller does not have access to the internet to view Trimble Maps or you have not set up a web map to use data from a web map provider, you can add your own image files to provide a background to the map.

Supported image file types

The following image file types and associated world files are supported:

With the exception of GeoTIFF files, background image files that you add to the project must have an associated world file to appear in the map.
Only 24‑bit color JPG files are supported. Pure grayscale JPG files are not supported.

TIFF files are generally more efficient in their use of program memory than other background image formats such as BMP, JPG or PNG. This makes it possible to load TIFF files with file sizes of 100 MB or more, while using only a few MB of program memory. However, if the TIFF file is one large tile then this means the entire file will be loaded into the program memory which will affect controller performance.

Adding background images

Link background image files to the job using the Map files tab of the Layer manager.

To open the Layer manager, do one of the following:
- Tap in the Map toolbar or the Video toolbar.
- In the Job properties screen, tap the Layer manager button.
Select the Map files tab.
To add files from another folder to the list, tap Add, navigate to the required folder and then select the file to add. You do not need to select the world file because the software automatically checks for the compatible world file.

If you add a map file that is stored on a USB drive the software automatically copies the file to the current project folder and then links to that file.
Tap Accept to return to the Layer manager. A single check mark next to the file name in the Map files tab indicates this file is visible in the map. Tap the file again if you want to hide the image from the map.
To provide better contrast with features in the job or in other linked files, tap in the map toolbar and select Transparency, and then move the first slider to the left to increase the transparency of background image file.
