To measure multiple lines in Measure codes

When you are measuring multiple lines that have the same code, you can use stringing to add a numeric suffix to each line so that you can keep track of which line you are measuring. Stringing enables you to:

  • Start measuring points for one line feature, and then pause it and start measuring points for another line feature of the same type before resuming the first feature.

  • Easily define the start and end points of line features without having to use control codes, which is useful when measuring several features of the same type one after the other.

To measure more than one line that uses the same feature code:

  1. Tap and select Measure / Measure codes.
  2. If you have not already started the survey, start the survey. If you are using a conventional survey, put the instrument in tracking mode.
  3. Select the code group from the list or press A–Z to quickly switch to group pages 1–26.

You cannot use alphanumeric key shortcuts if the Multi-code button at the bottom of the form is enabled.

  4. To start measuring points on the first line feature:
    1. To measure the first point, tap the appropriate code button.

You can also select code buttons using the keypad. If the button layout has three columns you can press the numeric key that corresponds to the code button, or use the arrow keys to navigate to the button and then press the Space key.

If Single tap to measure is not enabled, you must double-tap the code button to start measuring.

    2. In the Measure topo or Measure point screen, measure and store the point.

Once the measurement is stored, the Measure codes form appears, ready for the next measurement.

    3. To measure subsequent points on the first line, tap the same code button again or press the Enter key.

The line or polygon is drawn on the map as you measure points.

  5. To start measuring points on a different line feature of the same code type:

    1. Tap the + Str softkey to increment the suffix on the highlighted code button.

    2. In the Measure topo or Measure point screen, measure and store the point.

Once the measurement is stored, the Measure codes form appears, ready for the next measurement.

    3. To measure subsequent points on the second line, tap the same code button again or press the Enter key.

The line or polygon is drawn on the map as you measure points.

  6. To switch between the two line features in progress, tap the - Str or the + Str softkey.

The selected feature is highlighted on the map, and the map shows a dotted line from the end of the feature to the current point, enabling you to visually check how the line will be extended when you add the current point and to ensure you have selected the correct feature.

When measuring multiple lines at once, tapping the + Str softkey will show the next string in the sequence. When starting a new line, to find the next available unused string for the currently highlighted button, tap Find Str.
