Synchronizing data with the cloud
The information in this topic covers downloading specific projects or jobs to the controller and uploading specific projects and jobs to the cloud.
For the steps to download a project from the cloud for the first time, see To download a project. To upload a local project to the cloud, see To upload a local project to the cloud.
To automate synchronization to the cloud for any cloud job when it is the current job, tap in the Projects screen. For more information, see Automating data upload using the Sync scheduler.
The cloud buttons next to the project or job name indicate if there are changes to files on the controller to be uploaded or changes to files in the cloud to be downloaded.
indicates there are changes in the project or job in the cloud to be downloaded to the controller. Tap to download all modified files in the project or job.
indicates there are changes in the project or job on the controller to be uploaded to the cloud. Tap to upload all modified files in the project or job.
indicates the project or job in the cloud is exactly the same as the project or job on the controller.
indicates there are changes in the cloud project or job that conflict with the local project or job and action is needed. Tap and select Upload or Download. See Managing file conflicts.
indicates you do not have access to the project or to the job. This could be because:
-
you are not assigned to the project or to the job.
-
you were assigned to the project or job but were then unassigned.
-
you are one of several users who have access to the same controller and the project or job is assigned to one of the other users.
-
you are assigned to the project but you cannot open it because you have not been assigned a Connect Business for Trimble Access subscription. Users without a Connect Business for Trimble Access subscription are able to work with only one project. To request a subscription, contact your project administrator.
When you change the status of a job that resides in the cloud to In progress or Fieldwork complete, changes to the job are automatically uploaded to the cloud. Job files synchronized to the cloud are shown in Trimble Sync Manager.
To manage the upload or download of individual files or to deal with file conflicts, select the project or job and then tap and select Download or Upload.
The cloud icons next to the file names in the Download or Upload screen indicate the sync status of each file. If you do not want to automatically sync all files, or if there are file conflicts to resolve, tap the name of the file and then select the most appropriate action.
indicates the file is ready to be downloaded to the controller.
indicates you have selected to skip this file and it will not be downloaded to the controller.
indicates the file is ready to be uploaded to the cloud.
indicates you have selected to skip this file and it will not be uploaded to the cloud.
indicates the file is being synchronized with the cloud.
indicates the file on the controller is exactly the same as the file in the cloud.
indicates there are changes to the file in the cloud that conflict with the local file and action is needed. See Managing file conflicts.
indicates the file conflict has been resolved (because you have chosen to overwrite the file or keep the local file). See Managing file conflicts.
If required, you can choose to skip downloading or uploading individual files. This is especially useful when you have large files
To select which files are synchronized to the cloud:
-
Select the project or job and then tap and select Download or Upload.
The Download or Upload screen appears, showing the name, type, and size of each file in the project that will be synchronized. For projects this will include modified files in all cloud jobs in the project.
-
To skip downloading or uploading a file, tap the name of the file and select Skip this file. The icon next to the file changes from or to or , to indicate that the file will be skipped. You can download or upload the file later when you have returned to the office.
-
To synchronize the files you have selected, tap Download or Upload.
Files you have selected to skip have a icon next to them and will not be synchronized until you choose to do so. See Managing file conflicts below.
If appears next to the project or job it indicates there are changes in the cloud project or job that conflict with the local project or job and action is needed. Tap and select Upload or Download.
In the Upload or Download screen, the icon indicates the file that is in conflict. Tap the file and then select one of the following:
- Overwrite local file: Changes made to the local file will be lost.
- Keep local file: Cloud file contents will be overwritten on the next upload.
Once you have selected the action, the icon next to the file changes to , indicating that the file conflict has been resolved. Once the file syncing action is complete, the icon will change to .
Occasionally when downloading a project the software will not present the Overwrite local file or Keep local file options and instead shows a message warning that the file contains content from another project and the local file must be removed or renamed before the file can be downloaded. Tap Esc to return to the Projects list and then open File Explorer and navigate to the C:\ProgramData\
The project Sync settings screen appears when you download a cloud project for the first time. To view the project sync settings for a downloaded cloud project at any time, select the project in the Projects screen and then tap and select Sync settings.
Project download tab
The Project download tab shows the files and folders in the Trimble Connect project folder that can be downloaded for use in Trimble Access. Tap folders and files to select them. The Trimble Access software will indicate when there are changes to the selected files and folders that must be downloaded to the controller.
-
The Trimble Sync Manager icon appears next to files uploaded to Trimble Connect using Trimble Sync Manager. These files are already selected and cannot be deselected.
-
For Trimble Access Pipelines projects, the Tally folder and files are not shown.
-
System files are automatically saved to the System files folder on download to the controller.
To refresh the files and folders shown in the Trimble Connect project folder, tap .
Settings tab
The Settings tab provides some additional controls for specific files:
-
Upload linked project files as well as field data and exports
To include project files linked to jobs when uploading data, select the Upload linked project files as well as field data and exports check box. To upload only field data and data exported from the jobs, clear the check box.
-
Download as TrimBIM
The TrimBIM (.trb) format is a Trimble format traditionally used to represent BIM or 3D models like IFC. It can also be used to represent other BIM models, including Navisworks Drawing (NWD), AutoCAD Drawing (DWG) and SketchUp (SKP) files, that have been uploaded to Trimble Connect.
To download these files to the controller as TrimBIM files, select the Download as TrimBIM check box. TrimBIM files are smaller, faster to download to the controller, and faster to load the first time you use them in Trimble Access.
Alternatively, to download IFC, DWG and NWD files in their original format, clear the Download as TrimBIM check box.
-
You must select the Download as TrimBIM check box to use DWG or NWD files when Trimble Access is running on an Android device. DWG and NWD files are not supported when stored directly to an Android device.
-
Conversion of NWD files to TrimBIM format using Trimble Connect is in BETA. It is only supported when you upload NWD files to Trimble Connect using Trimble Connect for Windows, not Trimble Connect Web.
For more information on assimilating BIM models as TrimBIM files in Trimble Connect, refer to the Trimble Connect documentation.

If you are unable to sync data with any projects:
-
Make sure you are signed in.
If the Sign in icon in the title bar of the Projects screen or the Jobs screen is gray, you are signed out. Tap the icon to sign in.
-
Check that you have an Internet connection by opening your web browser and visiting a site that is frequently updated, for example a news site.
To set up an Internet connection, see Internet connection setup.
-
If you are using a Trimble Access subscription, make sure the subscription has not expired.
To check the subscription expiry, tap and select About.
-
If you are using Trimble Access with a perpetual license, make sure the controller has a current Software Maintenance Agreement.
To check the current Software Maintenance Agreement status, tap and select About. The expiry date of the Software Maintenance Agreement is shown in the Software maintenance expiry field.
If you are unable to sync data with some projects but not others:
-
If you cannot view jobs that you are expecting to see or if you cannot sync data to some jobs, you may not be assigned to the job.
Contact the project administrator to make sure you are assigned to the job.
-
Make sure you are using a Trimble Connect Business subscription, rather than a Trimble Connect Personal subscription.
A Trimble Connect Business subscription allows you to create more projects and synchronize data with more projects than a Trimble Connect Personal subscription. To check your subscription type, tap and select About. If you have a Trimble Connect Personal subscription you may have exceeded the number of projects you can create. Ask your organization's License Administrator to assign a Trimble Connect Business subscription to you using the Trimble License Manager web app.
